MYR - BWN Weekend Trip
Natasha Zainall September 06, 2016 1
Our impromptu Miri-Bandar Seri Begawan trip was hastily planned two weeks after receiving Fauzi's transfer letter. Initially, we planned to go to Kota Kinabalu-Kundasang-Kudat, however, we had to push back our plan because the airfare was expensive. On top of that, there was a 4.0 earthquake at Ranau, Sabah.
Instead of risking our lives and putting a dent in our wallets, we had decided to fly to Miri and then drive to Brunei. The airfare to Miri was a hundred cheaper, so of course we went through with our Plan B. Fauzi has a friend in Miri, who is kind enough to pick us up from the airport at 8 o'clock in the morning and lend us his car for our whole four-day trip.
We tried to rent a car in Miri, but majority of the owners refused to let us drive across the border. And those who allowed, gave us a slit-throat daily rental rate and even requested an extra hundred ringgit as a 'ticket' to cross over to Brunei. Being the cheapskate we are, of course we declined to rent a Proton Viva for 120/day + 100 non-refundable deposit to Brunei.
When husband's friend learned that the rental car company tried to con us, he offered his Proton Prevé at our disposal, and we could not be any happier. Lol. Maybe I should set him up with my friend, as a thank you gift. 😝

Our journey to Brunei from Miri began early in the morning. The traffic heading east was not as heavy as some bloggers and local people made it out to be. Or perhaps because we went on Friday, which is a working day for Malaysians. It is a public holiday for the Bruneirian, though, so, I do not really get why the traffic was not bad. Nevertheless, husband and I were stoked! Haha.

It took us about half an hour drive from Miri Town to Sungai Tujuh Immigration Department. The route heading to this place was a one-lane street, and we were told by husband's best friend, who lives in Brunei, that the chances of policemen lurking around, behind the trees and in the bushes were pretty high, so we were advised to cruise at 60kmph along the long, winding road. It was pure torture.
Step 1.
Once you reach Sungai Tujuh Immigration Department, you are required to hand over your passport. You don't have to come out of your car, like in Singapore. All you have to do is drive-in through one of the stations and hand over your passport to the officer behind the booth. Double check your passport where it has the OUT stamp, otherwise, you won't be allowed to cross the border.
Step 2.
Proceed your journey for another 5 minutes before you reach, what looks like a toll. There are lanes for foreigner cars and Malaysian cars, so choose your lane correctly, or you are deemed to be reprimanded for failing to read the signage. If you are driving from Miri to Brunei by a car registered under Malaysian number, you may drive pass the toll for free. However, should you drive a car registered under Brunei number, then you are required to pay 10MYR at the toll. Hence why, it is important to choose your lane correctly.

Step 3.
Drive along the winding, quiet road and in another 10 minutes you will reach Brunei Immigration Department, where you are once again required to hand over your passport to the officer behind the booth.
Husband and I were quite surprised that the immigration officers did not even glance at us to check whether those passports really do belong to us. Unlike some countries that we went before, we were told to come out of our vehicle and had our passports checked thoroughly. Just in case, you know. 😕
Step 4.
Anyway, we had our passports stamped, so we proceeded to the Brunei Customs Department, where we were supposed to display our car grant, but of course to our surprise, the officer did not even check our document. We could have stolen someone's car and drove it all the way to Brunei, for all she cared. Haha.
Instead, she gave us a red slip to be filled-in. I, honestly, thought we had to fill up the form and hand it back to her, but she waved dismissively at us and told us to proceed to Rasau Bridge Toll. And that was about it. Haha.
Step 5.
Another 10 minutes drive, we arrived at Rasau Bridge Toll, where we were required to pay 3B$/per vehicle in order to enter Brunei. For someone earning in Brunei Dollar, 3B$ is nothing.

You now have crossed the border. Selamat Datang ke Kuala Belait. Welcome to Kuala Belait.
This was where husband and I were staying for three days and two nights. One of husband's best friend works and lives in Kuala Belait. Like a true friend he is, he offered us a place to stay, and a car to lend. And of course, husband did not refuse his offer, haha.
I will write more about Brunei tomorrow. My stomach does not feel right, at the moment. Take care for now!
