Student No More
Natasha Zainall January 17, 2011 4
After four years of bitter sweet moment, hard work and struggle, today, I am no longer a student, but a teacher trainee. Yes, don't look so surprise! It is my dream to be an educator. Besides, what feels more right than following my family's footsteps?
Mama, I know u're reading this entry and I know that you're proud of me. :P Needless to say, I am VERY proud of myself. Another educator in the family. XD

Yeeep, this the my practicum school.
First impression is important. Thus, I woke up very early today because I wouldn't want to be late on my first day of work. And when I say 'very early', it really was early. I wasn't joking. I woke up at 5 because I was super nervous that I could not even sleep properly last night.
At 6.18 I arrived at the school and my friends were already in the principal's office. Everybody looked 1) pale because of nervousness and 2) decent because all the four of us wore baju kurung aaaaaandd Hijab (head scarf). Teheee.
What? We had to look presentable and decent to the students. To be a good teacher means to set up good examples to the kiddos. (Poyo je right, lol) If only they knew we are never this decent and goody in public. Tsk tsk.
The school's assembly began at 7 and we were seated right behind the principal, herself. Yup, right behind her. And everybody was eyeing us like we were some kind of alien, invading their school.
I was expecting that the principal would introduce us to the students and teachers in the assembly, however, she didn't. Talk about 'welcoming' us much. -.-'

After that, we were brought to our desks. And they were small. And old-fashioned. And dusty. And isolated. We had to share the desks because there were only 2 vacancies; 1) next to the yucky sink and have the huge possibilities of getting splashed by water when the teachers wash their hands and plates OR 2) near the door, better view and much cooling, but extremely noisy since it's nearer to classes.
I chose the latter. My desk partner is Sara.
My table is exactly behind my supervisor's. So close yet so far (haha, tiba-tiba), cause I didn't get the chance to have a conversation with her yet, as we were both busy. She was busy with her work that she did not even have the time to turn around and say hello to us and I was busy chilling with my friends at our new desks. Excited kan. Haha. XD
Overall, I found that the teachers are helpful, kind, some of them are friendly and some are not because these minorities have their mindset that TESLians are cocky & arrogant. Are we? *thinking*
The principal is a soft-spoker. She has the humour side in her, but yet she's strict.

It's 10 o'clock and I had my first class with 4 Fitrah. I was told, wait, more like warned, that this is the second last class and the kids can be very rude and intimidating, especially when they see a young, cute and small teacher (lol, that's what the teachers said, am not complimenting myself okay) like me as an easy target.
Easy Target : Small, cute, young, soft.
Geez, thanks for making me less nervous. -.-' Tsk.
Okay, they definitely lived up to their name. They were awfully loud! And they didn't give an effing damn when I entered the class. Tables and chairs were scattered all over the place and the boys were hand-wrestling at the back of the class.
First of, I may seem like someone who is easy to be intimidated, but the truth is, I am NOT. You SO don't want to feel the wrath of me.
Controlling big kids, who themselves can father kids, is not an easy job. But, the key is, to use 'reverse psychology'. At this kind of moment, I couldn't help but feel proud of myself for actually remembering all of the theories I've learned in the university and applying them for real. Thank God I paid attention during the lectures. Lol.
They were impolite, vulgar and disrespectful. At first. *wink wink* Haha. After getting to know them and forced them to make conversation with me, they were actually not that ill-mannered as what the other teachers had been telling.
Most of them came from poor and unstable family background. Some of their parents do drugs and some of them came home late at night, drunk. Yep, I'm talking about Malay parents. *heavy sigh* It's such a pity to see how narrow minded Malay people are nowadays.
These kids, they grew up in these kind of scene every day. So, it is not a surprise to see that some of them have been following their mothers and fathers' footsteps of doing drugs and alcohol and God knows what else, since the early age of 14.
Nonetheless, I successfully controlled them and they were quite nice to me. They sang a song for me before the class ended. For my first class with them, that can be categorised as sweet. Haha.
Creating a positive rapport and trust with the students are important. It is best for the teachers if they knew their students like their own friends or kids. It is imperative for the students to know that the teachers are their second-mothers and mothers do not judge their kids. ;)
It can be said that I have a teacher-friend relationship with them today and I really hope it will stay that way for as long as we may.
Okay, I sound so wise and mature. Mama must be smiling to this. Lol. It's late, I better tuck myself to bed. Long day tomorrow.
