Today, we went to The Old Courthouse, just because I have an insane thirst for Victorian buildings with remarkable history.
Fauzi is on-call this entire Christmas week, which is such a shame. Therefore we could not afford to go too far as he might be called in. Seeing that Old Court is only a ten to fifteen minutes drive from General Hospital, we decided to drive up and indulge ourselves with some history lesson.
Well, I was more than happy, he was not. But hey, remember when people say, happy wife, happy life? Haha.
The Old Courthouse was built in 1874 to serve as the city's administrative centre during the ruling of James Brooke II. Initially in 1847, Father Rupe built a two-storey wooden building as a school cum church, but later abandoned his plan. James Brooke II took over the piece of land, which now stands in the middle of the traffic, and built his administration office.
It has four main blocks surrounding an internal courtyard. It was used to house all government offices and held numerous state ceremonies, high court proceedings and meeting until 2000. Since then, this building has been converted into Tourism Complex and a small block of it was converted into a fine dining restaurant. And recently, another fine dining restaurant has just opened on Margareta Square, another historical monument, situated right across The Old Courthouse.
Maybe I could convince Fauzi to bring me there one day? 😁
